What emotional changes can I expect when I start HRT?

Can you answer Chelly L’s question about Menopause?:

I’m a MTF transsexual and i’ll be starting HRT soon; when I start how will my emotions be? What will life be like for me emotionally after I start HRT? Will the new feminine emotions be hard to control at first?

Menopause Feedback: I think they may be harder to start at first, because it is a rush of hormones, but after a while you will be able to control it. Life will probably be a little hard when some people (the phobics) find out what you’re undergoing, but for those who accept, they will never change.
Are you going to be a straight female or gay female, just wondering?

Menopause Feedback: that’s my wish to start hrt and the rest (i wish i was born a boy).. and my own feeling is that when you start that you’ll be more happy, cause that’s the way you wanna be in this world and live as a person who you belong to, one thing i know is that by starting to get hormones your body will go through a big change that possibly brings some emotional changes but you shouldn’t be worry about it :) they all will go fine if you’re 100% sure about starting your transition..
    good luck to u

Menopause Feedback: It all depends on how you are taking your HRT. Something like pills, or injections will create flux in emotions. Your emotions will go up and down a lot with it. If you’re starting off on a low dose you might not notice things right away.

“When I began estrogen, I noted unmistakable emotional changes. My emotions were hypersensitive. I also noticed tenderness in my nipples and breast area, and softening of my skin. There was also a noticeable heightening in my sense of smell. My most interesting change wasn’t physical though, but mental. Aside from occasional emotional upheavals, I found I was much more calm and relaxed. This may have been a psychosomatic effect, but may also have been a response to the available estrogens in my body.”

Menopause Feedback: YMMV (your mileage may vary)

I experienced nothing but positives. Emotionally I was finally able to emote, whereas before I couldn’t externally express myself.

I would suggest you join an on-line support group so you can share experiences and learn from others. If you’re under 35 this is a great place:

Menopause Feedback: October 14Th it will be the start of my forth year. I Had a lot of very emotional issues going on at the time. I was on a bit of a roller coaster ride but I think that is due mainly because of the other issues I was dealing with. I did feel the effects of estrogen very fast really. I felt a calming effect overall. For the first time in my life I started to feel what in my mind was how I should feel. To hard to explain so I wont try. Physical effects have been great but the real changes take place inside, at least for me. There were times I cryed myself to sleep early on but that was due to other issues. The estrogen just made me more sensitive to my inner feelings I think. Over all the effects have been nothing short of wonderful. Good luck

Menopause Feedback: Everyone reacts differently to estrogen. I immediately felt a calming. Over time, I was able to let my emotions out which I had not been able to do as a guy. You may find that, sometimes, your emotions will come out as a flood. It can take a little time and patience to learn how to handle your emotions without shutting them down the way that guys do.

Menopause Feedback: Remember those Nestea commercials where the person would take “The Nestea plunge?” That’s what HRT was like to me, the Nestea plunge inside my head.
